What made you decide to be a mindfulness meditation teacher?
I have done a lot of meditation practice myself, starting back when I was editor-in-chief of Esquire magazine. Once I left in ’87, I gave myself long periods of meditation practice, sometimes six months in a given year.
What experiences did you have in the past that led you to write a book on life and emotional chaos?
I’ve had lots of experience seeing people deal with emotional chaos in their lives. I realized that I had developed a whole body of knowledge, and I wanted to share what I’ve learned from all these individuals.
Your book talks about suffering internally and self-violence. What advice would you give to a teenager, since the suicide rate among young adults is high?
We can do unskillful things. You may come across difficult situations that you can’t do anything immediately about, but you can change how you look at those situations, and that is actually something more powerful to oneself.
