Asian Art Museum location is 'interesting'

San Francisco is in final negotiations to keep the financially troubled Asian Art Museum in business, Mayor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday.

While nothing is being said about the agreement, Newsom did have some interesting comments about the museum itself. He praised the collection as the finest in America, but all but criticized its location in the San Francisco Civic Center

“I think the location is an interesting one,” said Newsom, whose office is visible across the plaza. “It means you have to do things more aggressively to get visitors.”

That doesn’t mean he thinks the collection should be placed elsewhere, “They’re locked in at the site. It’s a beautiful building but it presents challenges that you don’t find at any other cultural institutions in The City.”

He also called out the foundation that raises money for the museum, saying it is “going to have to step up a little bit more in terms of fundraising.”
