  • The group Citizens for an Accountable Sheriff are calling for Ross Mirkarimi to resign as Sheriff of San Francisco.

The effort to recall Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi was reinvigorated Wednesday with the creation of an online petition.

Grass-roots organization Citizens for an Accountable Sheriff is seeking 50,000 signatures to present to Mirkarimi and ask him to resign, but it gave no deadline for reaching that goal.

The organization’s volunteers said the petition, which can be viewed at www.rossresign.org, is meant to give supporters a place to voice their opinion.

“Clearly, a number of people were disappointed and do not feel he should be our sheriff,” said coordinator Andrea Shorter. “We’re asking folks to sign on to that so their voice can be heard, and we will submit it directly to him so he knows clearly where people stand in San Francisco.”

Shorter said the organization wants to urge Mirkarimi to resign in order to avoid a costly recall effort.

Mirkarimi was elected sheriff last year. Days before his inauguration, it was revealed that he was involved in a domestic violence incident with his wife at their home Dec. 31.

Mayor Ed Lee then suspended Mirkarimi for official misconduct after the sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment. He was sentenced to probation and counseling.

Mirkarimi was reinstated to his position in October following months of Ethics Commission hearings. During the proceedings, domestic violence advocates had argued that the sheriff could not serve as a law enforcement leader because he was subject to probation from his own jail system.
