A Nob Hill post office is closed after several workers were sent to the hospital with symptoms that could be related to a hazardous materials situation.

Fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said five employees working at the post office on the 1400 block of Pine Street were told by their supervisor to go to St. Francis Hospital this morning after experiencing “itchiness” over a period of a couple of days. Firefighters arrived at St. Francis shortly after 11:40 a.m. after “a substance” was found on the clothing of one of the employees.

Firefighter decontaminated the workers and they continue to search the post office for hazardous materials. At this point, no hazardous materials have been discovered.

“In our initial monitoring we weren’t able to pick anything up,” Talmadge said. “We’re approaching this situation with caution.”

The employees worked in a mail-sorting room with roughly 60 people.

Talmadge said the workers hadn’t opened any packages prior to displaying symptoms.
