Ramblin’ gambling man: Newsom makes friendly wager with Philly mayor

The first bet worked out nicely. The second one could be a bit more difficult to pull off.

By virtue of the Giants’ National League Division Series triumph over the Braves, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom won a friendly wager with his Atlanta counterpart Kasim Reed that resulted in Reed having to hoist a Giants flag above Atlanta’s City Hall.

With the Giants set to face the Phillies in the National League Championship Series, Newsom is again up to his gambling ways, embarking on another little friendly bet, this time with Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter.

If the Giants lose, Newsom will don a Phillies cap during an upcoming ceremony scheduled on or around Veterans Day, which takes place on Nov. 11. The opposite applies to Nutter if the Phillies lose. Both mayors plan on recognizing Veterans Day with formal events.

Unlike the Giants’ opening-series matchup with the Braves, in which San Francisco was favored and held home-field advantage, the Giants are considered significant underdogs against the Phillies, who finished with the best record in the majors this year.

Newsom managed to avoid flying a Braves flag over City Hall. Keeping a Phillies hat off his head will be a little tougher.
