Rival Mavericks organizers may cut a deal

Two groups applying for the same permit to operate the famed Mavericks Surf Contest may come to a compromise, delaying a decision by San Mateo County officials.

The Harbor District Commission was scheduled to look over permit applications Wednesday for exclusive rights to the waves from original contest organizers Mavericks Surf Ventures and new surf group The Jay at Maverick’s.

However, Harbor District General Manager Peter Grenell said Thursday the two groups are conferring and that he doesn’t want the commission to “sit in on something that may be a little contentious,” since the groups are starting to talk.

Mavericks Surf Ventures co-founder Kier Beadling did not deny or confirm they might merge.

“I suspect there is a compromise that addresses the surfers’ concerns and ensures the same level of operational execution,” Beadling said.

The Jay at Maverick’s spokeswoman Kylie Heintz responded to idea of a compromise via e-mail: “There are two separate applications before the Harbor Commission from two separate groups.”
