Two San Francisco museums are facing labor strife, with the vast majority of union workers at the de Young and Legion of Honor voting to allow their bargaining team to call a strike.

The nonprofit workers represented by SEIU Local 1021 say they’re angry that their health benefit costs are increasing, despite nearly $20 million in increased assets over the past two years for the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums, which runs the two facilities.

“We do not want to go on strike, but we will be forced to if management refuses to work with us,” Larry Bradshaw, SEIU’s vice president, said in a statement. “For a nonprofit organization that is community-oriented and culturally high-minded, management’s actions are appalling.”

The union also raised issue with a three-tier wage system that it said would create a class system of workers. According to a press release on Monday, the union represents 90 nonprofit workers at the two museums.
